Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price. For those that don't know about last week's social uproar regarding Daniel Madison's release 'Erdnase x Madison', the tongue-in-cheek claim of "I'm better than Erdnase, and I can prove it My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book. Andrews S. Erdnase spelled backwards. See Gardner's Foreword, pp. Although the author did not renew the copyright, the book has remained in print since , albeit small private printings on occasion.
Dai Vernon is credited with popularizing this influential text in the community of professional magicians. Well past ninety years of age, Vernon was fond of quoting from it, with page numbers, when discussing card techniques with his colleagues at the Magic Castle.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I don't know everything , but I do know when I see a recurring pattern. Why would so many publishing companies put out The Expert at the Card Table , is it for their health??
That being said , I think everyone here made a good point about why Erdnase is or isn't all that. I am personally with the former, but still have a lot of learning ahead of me, I have 5 different copies laying around in my room.
Andrews And let's not forget my signed copy , but that is not for reading so I excluded that one. Gabriel Z. I agree with you that Madison is probably better than Erdnase.
It's for that exact reason that I was let down by Erdnase x Madison. Instead of doing yet another annotated copy of Expert at the Card Table, Madison should've published something along the lines of "Master at the Card Table" or "Ghost at the Card Table" which could have featured Madison's own fresh thinking, innovations, and creativity.
Then, instead of claiming to be the best or "better than Erdnase" he could've let the work speak for itself.
Hopefully that's the next project. Maaz Hasan likes this. Anyone else see this email? As a first in Ellusionist history, one of our team has received death threats.
More than one. For those that don't know about last week's social uproar regarding Daniel Madison's release 'Erdnase x Madison', the tongue-in-cheek claim of "I'm better than Erdnase, and I can prove it Madison embraced the good with the bad in these responses.
Well respected names in the industry started to have their say and some purchased the work to see if they were right or wrong. This kind of fun has been missing from the magic industry and if anything, Ellusionist is all about fun.
We ALL came together, even though our opinions differed. Magic is, after all, a brotherhood. Despite all the controversy, the project shot to the top of our best-sellers list for this year and has received rave reviews It's only been released for 6 days or so With over 8 hours of content and a year put into the concept, we were and are genuinely proud of what it's become.

On creative calls last week, we joked about MadisonGate. Nobody is joking now. Please try again later. Verified Purchase. My 14 year-old grandson is fascinated by slight of hand and card tricks.
He's gotten quite good at it, but I thought this book might help him get even better. He devoured the book after receiving it for Christmas and his skills have already really improved.
It's a classic in magic. I searched for another version that was free since its public domain. The Kindle version doesn't react to page searches.
What can you say about this book that hasn't been said times before? In just short pages under half of which are specifically devoted to magic , S.
Erdnase redefined card magic. I am very much an amateur, but am familiar enough to recognize nearly everything in the book, including some entire routines Ricky Jay, for instance, does a version of "The Exclusive Coterie" in which he recites the pages-long patter from this book word for word.
Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential. The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.
The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings.
And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem. It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try.
The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple you can master it in about 5 minutes , yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect.
Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.
Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than years after its publication. It is great. Really great. All of the written information is there which is your meat and potatoes, and I'm happy to own that.
BUT all the the illustrations in the printing are pixelated and hard to see. Will gain everything I can from this book then most likely resell and get a better quality version for the shelf.
